* It is also possible to make it in six days, making the stages 1 and 2 the same day. In this case, the first day you have to walk morning and evening, and to be at the meeting point before 7.30 am (see PRACTICAL INFORMATION).

In each STAGE will provide information and documentation about the various natural areas, buildings and places most interesting and surprising.

The accommodations have been specially selected for its location next to the river, for its charm, and for the quality of service provided (in the modalities guided and autoguided tour).

In the afternoon...you can relax in the comfortables accommodations that we have selected for you, or explore freely around, to do so you will receive every day a list of suggestions to discover the natural and cultural environment around the accommodation. STAGE 1  "The origen of water"

Sources of the Fluvià - Falgars

    Distance: 4,6 km.
    Vertical distance: 200m. (downhill)
    Difficulty: low
               

Pick up the customers at the meeting point.

Transfer to the start of the route.

  Top places to see:  
  •Source of the Fluvià. birth of the first waters of the river, in a meadow at 1137 m. heigh.
  • Wonderful meanders of the high course, carved into the rock by the passage of water from the surrounding mountains.
  •Salt de la Coromina, spectacular waterfall of more than 60 meters. Located in the cliffs of Falgars, separates the high course of the Fluvià from the agricultural plain of the La Vall d'en Bas.

 

 

Accommodation: La Coromina, Charming farmhouse in a stunning setting.
Meals: catering with regional cuisine in the same house (depending on the time of pick up, lunch may be on the way to the start of the route).

STAGE 2  "Landscape inverted"

Falgars - Olot

    Distance: 17,7 km.
    Vertical distance: 506 m. (downhill)
    Difficulty: medium
         
  Top places to see:    
  Els Hostalets, colorful traditional village located in the middle of La Vall d'en Bas.
  The "tossols", small volcanic formations which have shaped a particular landscape in the area called Bosc de Tosca.
  Volcanic barrier that shut down the river and originated the current Valley.
  City of Olot: modernist buildings, art museums, museum of volcanoes and exceptional natural surroundings.

 

 

 

Accomodation: Hotel Borrell, confortable and elegant 3-star hotel in the center of the town of Olot, located next to Eixample Malagrida, a charming urban garden.

Meals: Restaurant La Quinta justa, traditional cuisine, combining tradition and modernity with seasonal productst.

STAGE 3  "The powers of Vulcan"

Olot - Castellfollit de la Roca

    Distance: 18,3 km.
    Vertical distancel: 160m. (downhill)
    Difficulty: medium-low
 
  Top places to see:
  • Discovery of volcanoes and various lava flows that have shaped current orography interacting with the rivers of La Garrotxa. Starting by the volcanoes that surround Olot, the entire route is a succession of several impressive volcanic scenarios. h
  Industrial heritage of La Canya and Sant Joan les Fonts, developed due to the utilization of the river.
  • Romanesque monuments of Sant Joan les Fonts: castle, bridge and ancient Benedictine priory.
  •Amazing village of Castellfolllit de la Roca, built on top of successive volcanic lava flows.
           

 

 

Accomodation and meals: Fonda Ca la Paula, comfortable traditional Catalan Inn, active since 1870, in nineteenth-century style, located in the heart of Castellfollit de la Roca. Varied offer of traditional cuisine.

STAGE 4   "Stone warriors"

Castellfollit de la Roca - Besalú

    Distance: 16,1 km.
    Vertical distance: 100m. (downhill)
    Difficulty: medium
 
  Top places to see:
  • Exploration of the erosive force of the river in its middle course, in interaction with different geological elements (volcanic basalt, gypsum veins,...)
  •Hydroelectric power stations and industrial use of water along the entire route.

  Argelaguer Romanesque church and castle.
  Besalú medieval town: medieval Bridge, romanesque churches, walls, ancient Jewis quarter...
           

 

 

Accommodation: Hotel Comte Tallaferro, Hotel Tallaferro, luxurious 4-star hotel in the center of the county town of Besalú. Its foundations date back to the twelfth century, and the current structure is listed in the local heritage.

Lunch and dinner: Restaurant Cal Parent, Volcanic cuisine of quality, with original products and dishes of La Garrotxa.

STAGE 5 "Underground mysteries"

Besalú - Esponellà

    Distance: 16 km.
    Vertical distance: 120m. (accumulated)
    Dificulty: medium-low
 
  Top places to see:
  • Wetland on the island of the Fluvià, prior to the confluence with the River Ser. Observation area of birds and otters.
  • Medieval village of Serinyà, narrow streets, houses piled up, its Romanesque church, and the insistent presence of water.
  Prehistoric caves of Serinyà, inhabited since the Paleolithic, and formed by slow runoff waters of an ancient lake.
  •System of streams and underground aquifers of "Banyoles-Espolla-Fluvia". In the intermittents ponds of Espolla, sometimes its possible to see a smalls prehistoric animals: the triops!
           

 

 

Accommodation and meals: Cozy wooden bungalows next to the route and close to the river in the Càmping Esponellà. Bungalows of high quality, equipped with heating and air conditioning. With a restaurant, outdoor pool and heated pool on premises.

STAGE 6   "Historical crossroads"

Esponellà - Santa Eulàlia

    Distance: 24 km.
    Vertical distance: 111 m. (downhill)
    Dificulty: medium
 
  Top places to see:
  • River terraces formed by the major meanders of the Fluvià in its lower course.
  • Villages of Vilert and Orfes. In addition to being charming places, allow you to discover the differences between human settlements in the vicinity of a river.
  Bàscara town, with medieval buildings and keypoint for communications between the Iberian Peninsula and the rest of Europe. In this point and throughout the history, the river has worked as natural frontier in conflicts and disputes.
  Castles and churchs in the villages of Romanyà d'Empordà, Vilajoan, Arenys d'Empordà and Palau de Santa Eulàlia.
           

 

 

Accommodation: Mas Llorenç, Charming holiday cottage built in the nineteenth century, in the middle of nature, next to the Fluvia, with terrace and pool in front of the cottage.

Lunch and dinner: Cuina 22, Home delivery of creative mediterranean cuisine.

 

In the afternoon...

Romanesque church of Santa Eulàlia,

STAGE 7   "The ghost coast"

Santa Eulàlia - Fluvià mouth

    Distance: 18,5 km.
    Vertical distance: 30m. (downhill)
    Dificulty: easy
 
  Top places to see:
  • Romanesque set and Roman remains of Sant Miquel de Fluvià. In the neighbouring village of Sant Tomàs de Fluvià we'll find some exceptional Romanesque frescos.
  • Former meanders of the Fluvià, recovered as wetlands for habitat of birds.
  Sant Pere Pescador, with baroque church, the island of Caramany (navigable by kayak), and confluence with the old river course of the eighteenth century.
  Fluvià mouth and the Gulf of Roses.
           

 

 

Lunch: in Sant Martí d'Empúries, excellent cooking fish in a medieval village.

 

In the afternoon... (only for customers who rent an additional night in the city of Girona)

Visit of the city of Girona:

Gothic cathedral

Romanesque and gothic churches,

Museum of Art, Film Museum, Diocesan Museum (with the romanesque masterpiece of the "Tapestry of the Creation")...

Medieval Jewish quarter, Arab baths, Roman remains, and medieval wall....

 

 

» The route includes the accommodation (six nights) and the seven days meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner and a second breakfast during the route (dinner is not included in the last day, once completed the route, unless you hire the additional night, consult the section "prices").

» In the price are included the inputs and activities that are carried out during the tour (tickets to public buildings, visits to monuments, kayak trip, etc. ).

» The routes are planned to be done exclusively in the morning. The afternoon is free, xcept ifyou want to make the route in six days, then the first day will walk in the morning and in the afternoon.

» Routes are conducted from Sunday to Friday, but can be adapted to other days according to the needs of each customer.

» For customers arriving a day before the route (or the day after checking out), they can rent accommodation and dinner in Girona through DISCOVERING FLUVIÀ (consult the section "prices"). And, In the afternoon... you can visit if you fancy, the city of Girona.

» The baggage will be transferred for the organization from the place of departure to arrival accommodation. so participants must bring only that which consider essential as hand luggage.
