The Fluvià and the volcanos

Discovery of the interaction of volcanic lava and the river. Volcanic activity blocked the river and was the origin to two highly contrasting landscapes, usually inverted: a former lakeside system and a rapids system with volcanic perneable aquifers.

Along the route we will observe the interaction between these two elements, and also the damage caused by the river, human activities that have been developed from the Iberian times, and the curiosities that hides the river, just in front of the gates of a town.

Historical approach to the mouth of Fluvia

The last sections of the river are not only a natural reserve of birds, but also a complex ecosystem where geologic forces converge with fluvial and maritime activity. Over the time, this interaction has changed significantly the landscape and even the waterfront.

All these forces have left their mark on the ground: the island of Fluvia, the coastal wetlands, the fixed and mobile dunes, ancient paths of the river ... A river that has moved his mouth up to six kilometres, and which was crucial for the romanization of the plain of l'Empodà.
